ABOUT TGS

TGS was founded in 2003 by Dr. Robert E. Schwerzel, who serves as President and Principal Consultant.  Dr. Schwerzel holds a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and a Ph.D. degree in Physical Organic Chemistry from Florida State University.  He has done postdoctoral research in organic photochemistry at Cornell University and in magnetic resonance at Brown University.

For 20 years, Dr. Schwerzel directed contract research programs in solar energy utilization, optical materials development, and nonlinear optics for government and corporate clients in the U.S., Europe, and Japan at the Columbus, OH laboratories of Battelle Memorial Institute, one of the world's premier contact research organizations.  During that time, he received an I·R 100 Award for the co-development of Laser-EXAFS spectroscopy (a new technique for obtaining detailed structural information about non-crystalline materials), and was named "Technical Person of the Year" by the Columbus Technical Council.

In 1993, he joined Georgia Tech Research Institute as a Senior Research Faculty Fellow, where he led research programs on nanocomposite nonlinear optical materials and on new materials for "optical chips" based on integrated optics.  Later, he served as Director of the Photonics Business Unit at MicroCoating Technologies, Inc., reporting to the CEO and Founder of the company and working to apply the company's unique thin-film deposition process to the fabrication of novel integrated-optic systems-on-a-chip for use in the fiber-optic telecommunications industry.  In this capacity, Dr. Schwerzel took his Business Unit from zero dollars of external revenue to a projected $5 million of external revenue in less than 3 years.  He holds 11 U.S. patents, and has over 60 technical publications and presentations.

TGS was founded by Dr. Schwerzel to help address the problems with product development and commercialization that he saw in many of the companies he had worked with throughout his career.  Since its inception, TGS has worked with clients ranging in size from multinationals to a 3-person startup that we operating out of the basement of the CEO's home.  We've helped them, and we look forward to helping your company too.
